Colorado is no stranger to harsh weather, and hail is one of the biggest concerns for homeowners in the Springs. Hail season in Colorado lasts from mid-April to mid-September, peaking in June. Hail can cause sudden and significant damage to your roof, siding, and gutters. If hail hits your home, it’s important to assess the damage and contact your insurance provider as quickly as possible. We understand that hail damage can be stressful, so we’ve compiled a checklist to help you through the process from start to finish. Hail Damage ChecklistWhen filing an insurance claim, time is of the essence. Follow this step-by-step checklist to help you navigate assessing the damage, obtaining an estimate for repairs, filing a claim, and submitting payment to your roofing contractor.
Step One: Assess the Damage Immediately after a hail storm, you’ll want to walk the perimeter of your property to assess if there is any damage. Visually assess the damage on your roof, siding, gutters, and windows. Take photos of the damage as you go. You’ll also want to take a photo of the hail next to an object, like a tennis ball or your hand, for scale. Step Two: Call a Licensed Roofing Contractor Call a professional roofing contractor to thoroughly assess the damage, check your attic for signs of leaks, and provide an estimate for repairs and materials. This step is important, because a licenced, trusted roofing contractor can give you accurate information to pass along to your insurance provider. After the inspection, your contractor can tarp your roof, if necessary, to protect the interior of your home from further damage. Step Three: Contact your Home Insurance Company Call your insurance provider to file a claim for your hail damage. Read your policy thoroughly to understand your deductible and what is covered.Your insurance company will send an adjuster to your home to assess and confirm the damage. At MD Roofing, we will meet with your adjustor at your home to provide details of your inspection and an accurate estimate of costs for repairs and materials. Make sure you ask your adjustor what discounts are available if you were to upgrade your roof system. Step Four: If Approved, Begin Repairs Your insurance provider will either approve or deny your claim, and notify you of how much you will be compensated for repairs. If your claim is approved, your roofing contractor can begin work on repairs or replacement. If denied, you can file an appeal and schedule a re-inspection with both your insurance adjuster and your roofing contractor. You will also likely be required to submit additional documentation or evidence. Before disputing a claim, check your insurance policy. Claims can be denied simply because the cost to fix your roof is less than your deductible amount. Step Five: Request Additional Payment, If Necessary If your claim is approved, your insurance provider will issue payment to you and your mortgage lender within five days. You and your lender will endorse the check before paying your contractor for repairs. If the repairs cost more than the initial insurance payment, MD Roofing will submit receipts for work and request additional payment from your insurance company for the full cost of repairs and materials. Hail season in Colorado Springs causes widespread roof damage, which attracts short-term roofing contractors to flock to the area for the summer. However, if you have follow-up repairs or year-round roofing needs, these companies won’t be here to help. At MD Roofing, we are a trusted, locally owned and operated company. We live and work in Colorado Springs, and only serve the surrounding community. If you experience hail damage to your home exterior, we can provide a same-day inspection, meet with your insurance adjustor, and help you every step of the way in repairing your roof. Plus, we’re available all year to handle your roof repairs, damage, or maintenance. Give us a call today to schedule a free roof inspection.

Thanks for pointing out that we need to ensure that the roofing company is licensed and trusted to get accurate information regarding the roof for the insurance claim we will file. I will keep that in mind in case we need to get it repaired after hearing the news. It seems that there is a change of hail storm within this week, so I rather be prepared with a professional that I can contact as soon as the storm is over.

As a roofer, I always advise homeowners to act quickly after a hailstorm. This article makes a great point about inspecting for damage as soon as possible and contacting a professional to assess the situation. Hail can cause hidden damage that, if left unchecked, can lead to more serious issues. Getting a thorough inspection ensures you catch any problems early and can get repairs started right away.
